good choice on your first bike!
I also started on a gs500 about 5 yrs ago. I rode it for almost a year and a half putting 9,000 miles on it.

If you havent already, check out the following two sites:
-gstwin.com which is gs500 specific and has a very active (if not sometimes juvenile) discussion forum, of which I am an administrator.
-my gs500 site, http://pantablo500.tripod.com/ has lots of great info, mostly taken from the gstwin archives (now lost).

Welcome! Just sold my GS after 5-6 months and putting 4000 miles on it. Getting my new bike really made me realize just how much fun the GS was, enjoy it.

Few tips, if you do any upgrades, do NOT listen/trust the "jetting matrix" it is completely wrong.

Check the oil often, these are old motors.

could you be a little more productive and post up at gstwin what your experience with it is? the matrix is dead on for 89-00 bikes. the 01+ had different carbs and its not 100% on the matrix. post up what you tried, what mods you have if any and what the outcome was. it would help to fix the matrix if you'd do that.

I DID post up there. It is NOT dead on for 89-00 bikes. My carbs were fully in spec, float height, etc. Reccomendations from the matrix were 150 mains, last I was down to 135s and still rich. :fawkdance

On the GS500 Wiki, there is a table with jetting values, referred to as the "jetting matrix".

that jetting matrix has been used successfully (on the gs site, not the wiki site) for a looong time.

domindart, I'll go in and approve you now. same username I assume.

Dude, there is no point in defending that table. The bike ran with the much too large (as reccomended) jets in it, but it had weak performance, the tables are WAY off.

all I'm saying is that you and your bike are the exception, not the rule.
