View Full Version : Monday 7.5.04 ride...
I want to ride on Monday. Can't decide where, but I know I want to get out there early. Early for me is 8-8:30am. Who else wants to ride, and where do you want to ride?
If I get no interested parties, I might just join zrx1100chris on his ACH ride.
I will probably be riding that morning, it is just that i told a friend that i would ride with him this weekend and i doubt that he'll want to ride the crest. We'll probably ride the malibu area or the little t bouquet ride. But he is more comfortable with malibu, so it will probably be there. If anyone wants to lead this ride or join in you are more than welcome...just note that i suck as a leader on that side of town(can't find a street until i've already passed it).
What time will you guys be up there?
It is up to me to tell him what time i can ride, but i'll give him a call tonight...i want to ride early tho, before traffic and the heat settle in.
I'll let you know.

Hey Chris, My plans changed so I'm gonna show up at ACH at 8am on Monday. Hope to see you out there.

hmmmmm...Is this gonna be the real crest ride or a ride to the tree? Either way if this is the ride that you all want to take, then maybe i can coax my friend along.

...but seriously, I have never met any of the riders attending the ride (I don't think I have). Not sure if I'd be too comfortable with that.
ZMoe, are you still planning to ride?
If you guys are riding then i'll definitely be there, if not, then I'll ride little T, bouquet and may head to malibu if my body can still handle it.
Ya I'm still in. And it looks like it's 8am at the 76 on ACH. I'm not sure what route the SCS guys are taking, so we can decide once we're all there if we're going to go up the front or around the back.
Andre, zrx1100chris and Scally are ok guys. We rode with them the last time I did the Crest.
It doesn't look like there'll be a lot of Chatterboxes on this ride, so I might not bring mine.
Also, I have to be home by 2-2:30pm, so depending on where we ride, I may or may not be able to do lunch wit yaw'll.
See you guys tomorrow morning! graemlins/banana.gif graemlins/scooter.gif

Hey everybody... reading some various forums, there seems to be an abundance of tickets and accidents at the Crest this weekend. Even riding a comfortable "cruising" pace we can all still break the speed limit, but it's better to get a ticket than to get into an accident, so try to take it easy in the "pushing it" department.

So where is this 76 station?
It's across and down the street from the Shell gas station that everyone use to meet at.
Depending on where you're coming from on the 210, exit Angeles Crest Highway, go SOUTH of the freeway, the 76 will be on your right on the corner of ACH and Foothill Blvd.
I have no problem with turtle pacing this ride...i can't afford tickets.

Just checking if the ride is still going ahead ! I'll be there for sure at 8:00 am. FZ1 has 850 miles now, so I can give it a bit more gas and ride the curves in 3rd instead of short changing to 4th and 5th ! Happy Days !

Great ride today, started to get a little hot tho. My first ride up to Newcomb's. Decent food, but $10 graemlins/wtf.gif . We had a good eventless ride, but we did see the helicopter, fire engines, and other rescue vehicles heading up the crest on our way down.
I rode up to newcomb's from the tree on Dre's R6, and DAMN was it a great ride...the reverse shifting took some getting used to but the ride was sweet. Giving me more to consider for my next bike.
I rode Zmoe's 900RR from Newcomb's to the intersection and once again...DAMN, the power is there from the gettyup. the seat was comfy, the bike was heavier but not noticeable. Too much traffic on the way down, so i couldn't really get on the gas, but the 900RR is a great ride.
Thanks for letting me ride your bikes guys...i hope mine didn't slow yous down too much.

And... ugh, I don't even wanna think about it anymore. And yeah, the price is steep. We should eat at Dish where we get a "good neighbor" discount for riding motorcycles.
It was nice being back on an F4i. Strange how "comfortable" the ride was -- I don't remember it being that different from the R6.

heres what the helicopter was there for... sucks.
be careful out there guys!! weve already had a very close call on this board of someone dying.
FROM ANOTHER SITE:
Anyway here is the final report. I'll tell the story to the best of my knowledge of what happen today.
The guy's name is Toan Tran who pass away today and his twin brother is Phoang Tran.
Alright, about 8:00am we meet up at Starbucks in Downey, CA on Firestone Blvd off the 605 Fwy. There was a 6 of us in the group (myself & gf(passenger), Ernesto, Louie, Chris) including the twin brothers (new riders). From Starbuck we left around 8:45am and took the back side of the crest at Sunland going up to Big Tajunga towards the long straight (TREE). Yes i'll admit it that this may seem somewhat my fault for inviting them to ACH But before anything else, I did tell the guys that no matter what, "ride your own pace". I told them that if there was a more experience rider coming up right behind them to just slow down and move to the side and let them pass.
Anyhow, I was leading the group for a bit and then a friend of mine Ernesto (experienced rider) pass me since I really was just cruising it with my GF behind me. Now after Ernesto passed me, I thought that my other friend Louie (another experience rider) was behind me getting ready to pass. So I slowed down and moved to the side and let him pass. It turned out that it was Toan. Louie (RC51) and Toan(F4i) both had a red bike so I thought that it was Louie right behind me.
So, I followed Toan and in front of him was Ernesto. Toan was doing really well taking the turns so I kept following him. This may sound odd but watching him go seems like its making him want to just go faster and faster. When I saw that, I felt like I should take the spot back and go ahead of him but I was waiting for the right time. I then proceeded to follow him and he was following Ernesto. We cought up with 3 other riders on a cruiser. There was enough room for (1 rider) Ernesto to pass the leading cruiser so he did. I did not expect of this but Toan followed Ernesto and pass the tree riders on the cruiser. It was a slight right hander then a quick long left sweeper so I lost sight of him. I followed the leading cruiser and as we were going on the turn (left hander) we just saw a pile of smoke from the gravel. The cruiser in front of me immediately stop and i'm thinking to myself oh my God, this is not Toan. I was fooling myself that it wasn't him. Phoang was right behind me so we then rushed to his aid and damn, it sure was a bad site. Toan went down hard and by his position on the ground, he broke a lot of his bones that I could imagine.
Now I tried to call 911 but there wasn't any signal. A good samaritan on a mini SUV stopped by to see what happen and immediately they turned around to get help. about 5-10 mins later the aid on this big green trucks came. They then immediately did CPR for about 20mins before the chopper came and Toan got airlifted to the hospital.
SORRY IF I'M BORING YOU GUYS. Almost done.
At the hospital.
According to the doctor, Toan died at the scene. Toan snapped his head/neck and his head wasn't sitting where it is suppose to and was an immediate death. According to them, as soon as that happen Toan didn't even feel a thing and died.
Lesson learned:
I've been riding for about 4 years now going on 5 and still learning. I know about this but it always strike me. For those of you who do not know new or old riders specially new riders of course, when you go down (hope not) remember to just let go of the bike. After thinking of what happened today over and over, I came out to conclusion that Toan never let go of the bike and that caused him his life. Toan and the bike was just right next to each other. I can tell that if he did let go of the bike that the worst he could have gotten was probably a broken wrisk and walk away with it.
Well again, thank you guys for listening and about the donations any other suggestions help. Like I said, you guys can paypal me or mail the Tran Family directly. I am open for any other suggestions.
I was just at the family's house today and they want to go back to the scene so i'm taking them tomorrow as soon as Phoang calls me up.
Thanks all and ride safe,
Mark

Beauty of a day, too nice to be crashin'...I'm gonna have to ride there more often to familiarize myself with those roads.
Ride safe folks.

If you have AAA, get the "Los Angeles County Mountains & Deserts" map. It has all the roads of the Santa Monica Mountains and San Gabriel Mountains (including the Lake Hughes area).
That post on SCS was for an accident on Sunday, July 4th. I have yet to see anything about what happened today.

Hey Chris on that 2nd accident the one on Monday, when we were heading down Lower Big T, I remember a guy riding 2up going up the hill with his girlfriend on the back. It looked like a gsxr and neither one was wearing any real gear. It could have been them, because by the time we got to the 76 station, that ambulance and fire truck that zipped up the hill could have been for them.
That really sucks if it was.
Also about the accident on the 4th. Mark the guy who posted about the accident, is the Mark we all know who rides the gxsr750 and is Wil's good buddy. He's a good rider and was just trying to slow the newbie guy down.
But nuff said, from now on I will always do the pre-ride speech to any new riders to our group.
