What he meant was that the bike has so little compression resistance that you can literally start the bike by hand, ie rotate the kick starter with your hand.

Woohoo DIRTBIKE thread.
Im looking at a CR250 this weekend up north. Its a brand new 2003, so im a little weary of the red-sticker. I also wanted to find a CRF450R, but this thing is literally brand new and never seen dirt. Gonna lowball the guy and see if he bites. The owner won this, a honda jet-ski and a quad in a raffle, and only wanted the jetski. He still had to pay tax on all three though lol, so he needs the cash.

buy your own bike. Stop wastin money on the trackdays and racing pipedreams. Did i mention that offroad racing is a fraction of the cost of roadracing, and your much more likely to get a nice shiny trophy?
Come on doods, get your dirt bikes, I'm riding this w/e.
I'm looking at a dual sport too, to ride B-V this T/G w/e, and Big Bear in June.
You guys are missing out, you can do track days and ride dirt bikes, just learn to stretch the budget.
Road racing is expensive, it will chew up a lot of your your resources.
It is fun though, I only race one Sun a month.

Question for those who know better than me:
Is there really any diff between a kx, rm, or cr? is an 85 much better than an 80?
how much should i be expecting to pay for a green-stickered 80-85cc 2-stroke? i'm seeing some early 90's bikes for less than $1000, and all the early 2000's ones seem to be around $1500. will a 10-year old dirt bike still be ok as long as the engine has been well maintained?
THANKS

Just a matter of fit and which bike you like better. If you go to motorcycleusa.com, there are a few reviews on 85s that you can read.
Seems the CR is the 85 to ride for 05.
As far as 85 versus 80, the 85s have more punch. A 10 year old dirt bike should have had several new top ends and at least two tranny rebuilds, depending on freq of use.
I'd go as newest as possible that still fits your budget. The 00 and newer bikes are much better than early 90s vintage.

Good luck with your purchase Elaine. When you test ride the 80's, make sure you really get on the pipe. This will tell you if the 80 has enough grunt for ya. I agree with Earl on getting the newest one that fits your budget. Keep in mind that only pre-2003 are green-sticker if you plan on riding year-round (I do). If you can find an older one that hasnt been ridden that hard, that should be fine too.
One thing i try to avoid when buying a dirtbike, is buying one that has been raced, so keep that in mind. My reason for this is that if the bike has been raced, its probably been beat pretty hard. There are a lot of things that will wear a lot faster when the bike has been raced rather than just trail-ridden. Additionally, raced bikes will usually look really nice, but often they've been through 2-3 sets of ugly plastics and have been down a lot. On the other hand, bikes that have been raced are usually maintained a bit better then those that arent. You REALLY wanna stay clear of bikes that were used as practice bikes.

Planning on Sunday at Cahuilla Creek MX park, it's near Temecula on the I 15 south.
Do you have dirt riding gear?
I always ride with full gear; chest/shoulder/back guard, knee/shin guards, kidney belt, elbow pads, boots, pants, jersye, etc.
DBing is great fun, but you can get banged up pretty good, gotta wear the gear, the stuff works.

So John, thats is a 450 four stroke right?? What is the good/bad about this setup as opposed to a 250 2 stroke. I was shooting the sht with a salesguy at hahm and he said the 250 2 strokes might be a bit much for a dirt newbie. he suggested a 250 four stroke. :dunno

The good is a LOT of torque. The bad is that the bike is a little heavier. This being a race bike, its lighter than most 4-strokes (and only 10 lbs heavier than a 250 2-stroke), but still has those extra pounds. Other advantages to the 4-stroke are that you dont need to mix the gas, engine will tend to last longer given proper maintenance.
Maintenance on a 4-stroke will be a little more involved (you have to check valves, etc) but will have to be done less often. 4-strokes are harder to start. 4-strokes have a much broader powerband (power everywhere) where 2-strokes are peaky and need to be revved to keep them in the power band. Youll have better throttle response on a 2-stroke.
I initially was going to get a CR250 (2-stroke) but all the reviews i read gave this bike a huge thumbs up. Problem is that a major selling point for me was having the bike green-stickerable (meaning it can be ridden all year long, as opposed to red-sticker Sept-April). ALL bikes 2002 or older can get a green sticker. Unfortunately, 2002 was the first year the CRF450 came out and its kinda rare (when compared to 2-strokes), and costs a bit more. A little bit of patience paid off though.
A 4-stroke motocross or moto-based 250 would be an EXCELLENT starter bike. The brand new Honda CRF250x (not the r, only the x) is green stickerable, as is the Yamaha WR250F and pre-2003 YZ250F. The Honda is a new bike but the Yamaha came out in 2001. You can find older Yamaha 426's (4-strokes) from 1997.
It might be tough to find these racing 4-strokes in your budget. I know Thach only wanted to pay around 2k, and this pretty much limits him to the 2-strokes. I recommend a 250 2-stroke over a 125 as the 250 will be a bit easier to ride. The 125 will take a lot of work, and is pretty violent to learn on.
Let me know if you need me to detail any of this. I know its a lot of dumb acronyms.
In summary:
2-stroke:
Easier to start
Easier to maintain
Cheaper
A little harder for a noobie to ride
Lighter
Have to mix gas/oil (a pain in the ass, but not a deal breaker)
4-stroke
Lots of easy-to-use power
Tough to start
Less frequent maintenance (but more complicated)
More expensive (Yamahas not so much)
Here is a nice one, but a little pricey (especially for a 250)

Another reason i chose the 4-stroke is that it is an easy and competitive bike to convert to supermoto, which is somethign that I have been interested in for a while.

I found a 1999 YZ80 that i was probably gonna get, but since i won't be able to ride it for a couple weeks (race this weekend, then maybe vegas, then going to boston for graduation), i decided to wait and see if any better deals come up. all the late 90s 80cc 2-strokes seem to be in the less-than-$1000 range which is good... and hopefully i'll be able to get rid of my ex500 in the meantime (unless Herrrrrb wants to buy it :D).

I'm still at least another week away from riding.
The best beginner MX track I've seen is at Cahuilla Creek MX Park, you guys would have a great time there.
It's a little far, but well worth the drive, the terrain and grooming are terrific.

We can try out that new place on the way to Willow off the 14.

Just a few thoughts...
I've never been to Gorman but was asking a guy at Cycle Depot about it and he indicated that the place is crazy packed with people on the weekends but pretty mellow during the week.
I would prefer a bit of elbow room to get used to riding dirt again...
The only riding places I'm familiar with and have been to are or were B.L.M. areas in the high desert...
-Stoddard Wells past Victorville,
-Johnson Valley also near Victorville,
-Red Rock Canyon past Maojave off of I-14
These loacals are all OHV areas and also camping is aloud...
I have to work on 6/18 so I probably can't go that day and Fathers Day is iffy at best.
The weekend of 6/25 & 6/26 is open and will be my best opportunity to do some sort of organized group thing... And I wouldn't mind camping out for the weekend if anyone else is into this.
RC-5Juan

Ive also heard that it gets pretty packed in the weekends, but if you go early enough you miss most of the crowds. Also, the place is huge, so I dont know how crowded it will actually be on the trails...i can see the tracks being packed, but I dont know about anything else. Since red sticker season is over, the crowds should be a bit less too. I wouldnt mind camping, but I will be up north the weekend of 6/25-6/26. Maybe ill try to go up the weekend after, but then Id be fighting 4th of July traffic on the way back.

Thought about it, but that means more bikes just sitting there.
The reason I'm selling the other two is just that, not enuf time to ride them.
Honestly, I prefer to ride dirt bikes in the early AM in the summer and then go do something else in the PM, like ride my bicycle on the strand, etc.
The dez is just too choking hot to ride in the summer.

The white one is a 94, I used to have one, it's a terrific bike with a lot of low end grunt for an MX bike. Only thing is that the rear wheel is a 19"er, I prefer 18"ers for better tire selection.
Have no idea what the black one is, since the plastics have been covered up with an a/m kit.

Anyways...I agree that the 4-strokes would be excellent for him to start on, but given his limited budget and the fact that he knows how to basically ride a motorcycle, a 250 smoker will be just fine. Maintenance isnt as bad as people make it out to be. A topend can be rebuilt within a couple hours...just ask Elaine :)

Modern 2 stroke liquid cooled engines are much more robust than everyone thinks. The hi maintenance 2 strokes are the road racing GP bikes, dirt bike engines are geared much differently and live life in the mid range.
As long as you use a quality syn premix oil like Klotz (that's all I use), the wear is very minimal, I've had top ends last a whole year of hard riding/MX racing without needing a rebuild.
But, it will need to be rebuilt at some point. The punch of a 2 stroke just can't be beat by a 4 stroke DB.

my idea of high-maintenance is having to mix the fuel and oil and having to install a kick stand. haha.. nevermind actual mechanical work! i wasn't even thinking about that. :P i like having something that is ready to rock and roll... gas up and go! don't wanna have to mess with it... :)

Wouldn't that be nice, a no maintenance DB!:)
Unfortunately, even 4 stroke DBs need to have the air filter cleaned, oil changed, suspension serviced, etc.
DBs are stressed at much higher loads levels and need to be greased regularly also; steering head bearings, swing arm bearings, rear linkages, etc.

My bikes were raced, so I had to do lots of maintenance.
If you're just play riding or trail riding, the frequency of maintenance is much less, but still needs to be done once in a while for optimal engine performance and handling.

Look for oil leaks and start the bike up and take it for a short ride to see if the tranny works and the clutch isn't slipping.
Also ask when the top & bottom ends were last done and when the forks and shock were last serviced.
These are the main hi cost wear items on 2 smoke DB.

Ebay Thach. I just bought all my new gear on there. There are some killer deals. The only thing I kept from my previous riding was a helmet and boots. Ive got an extra helmet but its pretty big and wont fit you. Check out http://www.bobscycle.com/ usually has some good deals as well, especially in the clearence section.
Earl- Cant make CC this weekend, maybe next? I thought July 2nd was your plan. Does it really take 2.5-3 hrs to get there from Redondo?

I'm planning on hitting Cahuilla this Sat and next Sat, I need to catch up on my riding. :banana
I've been sitting on my azz for the past 4 weeks w/o being able to do anything, because of my hand.
It takes me about 2 hours from Redondo.

Sounds good, do you know how to get there?
We could meet up at the Mobil station off the 15 at the 79 (Indio) offramp.
I'm seeing if any of the other guys want to go too.
I'm am going nutz, more so after watching the races yesterday, instead of being out there.
That 250 Aprillia rider in LW Novice is a marked man next month! :)
You did well yesterday.

It's really easy e to find Cahuilla Creek.
15 South to the 79 Indio exit, make a left, there's a Mobil station to the right immediately after you go under the freeway. That's where I usually stop for gas and a drink, etc.
Then it's just 79 East until you hit the 371 East, and 5 miles down on your right is Cahuilla Creek MX park.

Yep, nothing killer at all. Thach should have a good time, as well as everyone else.
Probably the most noob friendly tracks I've ever seen.

Cheap HJC helmet, O'neal jersey and pants... sound ok? I want to order them from Terra right now.
Gotta go try on boots still...
Should be fine. You can always upgrade later. Dont forget gloves and goggles. A lot of folks invest in knee and elbow guards as well as a chest protector. I dont use any of that stuff (although i may get some elbow pads to protect my already dirt-bike-destroyed elbow.

I always wear everything; helmet, gloves, goggles, jersey, pants, boots, elbow/knee guards, kidney belt, and chest/back protector.
Trust me, the chest/back protector and knee/elbow guards are invaluable!!!
Don't forget to add Elaine and her KX85 to the dirt riders list.

I hope you like those boots, I think they're the best bang for the buck, and they break in fast! Very comfy too! Yep, great minds think alike!!! :D
Snow boarding/ski goggles flow a lot of air to keep the fogging to a minimum. Dirt bike goggles are designed to flow air, filter the dust to keep your eyes clean, and "seal" much better at the edges.
They also have a wider band to keep it from moving around as you jump, hit whoops, slide around, etc.
I have snow boarding goggles and dirt biking goggles, they are very different in design and are purpose specific.
You can get good goggles for $20-25, I like Oakleys and Scott goggles for DBing.

Did i mention that offroad racing is a fraction of the cost of roadracing, and your much more likely to get a nice shiny trophy?
if you are racing AMA dist. 37 or 38 I seriously doubt you will be a newbie coming home with a trophie. Those dirt racers are fast as hell and unless you are super fast on dirt for long periods you are not winning any trophie.
Just wanted to make sure the street people don't think it will be easy. if you want a trophie and race on street stick with that, you will get that trophie a lot sooner that way.

I was going to get a green sticker bike, but decided not to, I just won't have any time to ride it with the training and bike work I need to do to get ready for the 250/50 in Sept.
But, once the 250/50 is over with, I'll be doing a LOT of dirt biking this Fall and Winter. So, we will definitely have an "SBN Day in the Dirt!"

I've been going to the desert lately (Barstow, Lucerne, Stoddard Wells...)
So let's see some bills...
- 3/4 tank of gas $40
- Gate fee $0

- Lunch at Carl's Jr. $5
Looking at about $45 bucks...pretty hefty, but well worth the trip.
