View Full Version : 600 mile service?

I've read on these and other forums that I should change my own oil. It's probably really easy, but for the first service I'd much rather take my bike to the dealer and have them do a once over to make sure everything is kosher. After that I'll change it myself (although I'm not all that comfortable with doing it because of storage and hauling to a recycling center).

Does anyone know what all they do during the first service? I plan to take my bike back to Chaparral where I bought it, but they want $200 for a full service deal and two hours to complete it. What the heck are they doing?

I notice what sounds like a rattling in the high RPMs in low gears and now in the higher gears. At low RPMs I don't hear it but when I'mon surface streets and change from first into second I hear it. I'm planning on mentioning this to the service guys when I have them work on it.

One more question...how soon after 600 miles should I get it done? I apparently got there too late yesterday and I'm sitting at 660 miles. I won't be able to make it until Thursday, but I wanted to make sure that I'm not damaging anything.

Thanks!

600mi service is just an oil & filter change plus a "visual" check-up on loose bolts and such. In which you can do this all by yourself for the cost of only the oil and filter.

Yep, basically just an oil and filter change and visual inspections like Jikser said.

+1 on moomba for some answers
i dont think it will hurt the bike if you go over 600 miles.
All Chap does for the first service is tighten up your chain if needed check air filter change oil and tighten bolts.
i would honestly do it my self, if you need help hit me up, im in san bernardino so im not to far away from you.

Moomba looks good, but it's 40 miles from my house. That's quite a trek just for service. So I guess it makes sense then for it to be $200. $80 per hour for labor @<hidden> 2 hours is $160 plus $40 for the oil change.

Where in Rialto are you and how far is it from the corner of Cherry & Baseline. I can stop by and show you how to change the oil, will even bring my own rear stand & filter wrench. :D It will take about 15 minutes to change the oil and filter. Between the 2 of us, it can be done in 1 hour. :ohcrap

Most likely your bike is okay. Just bring your bike in as soon as possible.

I took my bike into a stealership for the 600 mile service. It's a rip off for what they actually do. What's worse is when I was walking up to my bike I look down and see a red oily rag sitting on my freaking headers. WTF???? I grabbed the service manager and asked him if that is free with the first service. He was so sorry about the incident he gave the oil filter on the service for free. I got a free oil filter for them almost causing a bike-b-q.

Free oil filter? Hmm...at least with the rag you could wash it and reuse it. ;)

Well that does cut into their meth habit so I guess it was generous of them.

I just turned in my bike for 600mile service at 825miles. opps.
Come to think...those bastards said they might not be able to get it done today cuz there is 3 before me.

Maybe I should do it myself if it's just an oil change and looky loo...

Good thing is that I have service warranty. otherwise they would've charged me 270 something.

THat's probably depending on your oil change interval. I change my oil every 500 miles or so, so filter change for me = 2 oil changes.

James is that because you ride hard or just because? I've heard a similar rotation as a car...every 3k, but with a pretty high revving engine I would be under the impression that every 1000 would make more sense.

I shift at 15.5k most of the time so its cheap insurance for me, I ride slow but have a habit of shifting at redline :ohcrap. When I was riding on the streets, oil/filter change at every 2k miles :) I think the manual recommends it at 3k, but I'm paranoid.

i buy 12 pack of oil filters @<hidden> 60% off and case of oil (lasts me 4 oil changes)...so i change oil every 1k mi along with the filter for the 10R.

i change the oil and filter for the CRF every 8 hours (1 day of riding) of usage.

i change my oil every 3000 miles or there abouts. But yeah i change the filter at every oil change as well. I just changed the filter and adjusted the chain as well. I go tthis chil lube by Motorex and i have got to say it wors pretty well, as far as not flinging crap all over. I wa sthinking about using there product cuz it seems pretty good cleaners and chemiclas of sorts but damn its costly. the oil was 20.00 for the jug ( inorm get castro actevo 12.000 and the chin lube was 12.00 but when i went to willow they were there and i got some cleaners and such for real cheap

Geez...shift at redline? For me I don't seem to get a whole lot of power in first gear. I'm not used to the engine making all kinds of racket at high RPMs so I end up shifting around 5000 RPMs. I'm still a newb to motorcycles so I have some learning to do yet.

The only motorcycle riding I've been getting for the last year or 2 have been on the tracks. So I gotta shift at redline to pull my pass-n-pit maneuver on mr r-ggressive.

James likes to ptry and ride your ass the entire time (3 laps) hes on the track for that session and when the track exit comes around he passes then pits and claims he was tired.:welcome

Damn James, every 500 miles?? You are paranoid. I don't ride track so maybe that is usual??? I guess if I was going to buy a used bike, it would be yours. :D

I guess they say every 3K or 3 months. I have never (at least in the past 4 years--damn family:D ) made 3K in 3 months. Now for my car, no biggie, I do at least 25K a year.

The 600 mile service seems to be one of the most important services (at least that's what the moto rags say). I would get it done just to be in the safe side.

It's pretty common, but people just tell you about 3-4 track days. One track day on average is about 120 miles x4=480miles :)
