The older YZFs had some reliability issues (98-02). The newer ones are great. The 06 is many riders favorite bike of the year. In the 2 tests ive read it came in 2nd to the 06 Honda. What kind of bad things have you heard? What year are you looking at? Interested in doing supermoto (I believe YZFs are only 4-speed).

Shoot for a YZ. Its got a more aggressive cam and you will take advantage of the extra power if you decide to tard it out.

I dont think you necessarily need a wide ratio tranny. Its nice on bigger tracks with long straights, but a 5 speed should work fine. It might have a little more on top, but the YZ will get you there quicker. You really cant go wrong with either though. PLenty of guys tard out the WRs and 450X's.

The 426 is a good bike although it is kinda heavy by todays 450 standards. The dirt rider 2006 450 shootout was a little harder on the Yamaha as it finished behind the Honda, the Kawy and the KTM. I love the yellow plastics on the 06 but I would go with the WR because of the gearbox and the light (I'm a dez rider.)
This is for dirt right? I doubt you would tard an older 426...

According to Kyosho, 5-speed. A quick google search or test ride when you look at it will tell you for sure.

I have the 06 YZ450F, and I have had no problems with it, It was much improved over the 05 model aluminum frame, 5 speed etc, etc. All of the 450s are coming along and I don't think you can make a bad choice in this class. The close ratio gear box provides plenty of speed in the dirt and the acceleration is unreal. I am very happy with my YZ450F.:D
