:dunno As you can tell by my log in name I own a Kawasaki zzr 1200, and I have a stupid question. First I am the type of person who will black out from clapping my hands and chewing gum at the sametime; so with that out of the way is there anyone that has any advise for a coin holder that will fit on my model of bike and stop me from almost taking out the toll booth person trying to wrestle the change out of my pocket

I have a joe rocket tank bag that has a lil front pocket that i pu tall my change in. its real easy to get to while riding and holds a ish load of change. ( ijust cashed in all my change i had in there and it was around 22.00.

or you can get a lil pouch and sew some sticky back velcro to it and attach it to the inside part of your fairings by the guages
I say that cuz my friend used to have this lil carbon fiber kick stand disk that you would put under your kick stand when parking on soft areas, the disk was in the same kind of pouch that was put on the inside of the top fairing at easy reach

Don't you guys have electronic transponders you can buy, versus paying by coin???

We do here, no need to stop if you have one.

I'm not sure what toll road you are traveling on, but I know that most of the toll booths in the OC have the whole transponder deal.

now... You didn't hear this from me, but if you want to get through the toll booth without stoping (and paying for that matter), all you have to do is ride in the "fastrack" lane (the lane designated for people who have prepaid), and just make sure you don't hit the sensor (a recognizable metal strip) that is located in the middle of the lane. Another words, hug either the left or rightmost part of the lane (there is usually at least 2-4 feet on either side of the sensor). As long as you don't ride over the sensor, the camera's on the toll booth will not go off.

Besides saving a few bucks here and there, you save the trouble of having to deal with coin hunting (and you'll feel like Tom Cruise doing an unauthorized fly-bye in Top Gun when you blow by your favorite toll booth operator =).

Thanks my $0.02,

ride safe!

I don't know about situation in Chicago, but here, in SoCal you'd have two optons on toll roads:

1) carry a transponder like Earl mentioned
2) register your bike with the toll roads org, so they'll know your liucense plate

If you go through the automatic (transponder) booth w/o the transponder they photograph your plate, look it up in their database and charge you like they normally would. If you manage to ride between the sensors (simple induction loops) they won't even photograph you. Now, if there is a police cruiser on standby there you'd have some explaining to do. But in the end you have a valid account with the toll roads and the license plate is registered with them. Usually noone is there, at least on 73. They prefer radar traps on both sides of the hill than nailing toll violators.

EDIT: the sensors are induction loops similar to what you see at intersections. The sensors are a couple of yards AFTER the prepaid gate, that reads transponders. It works like that: the gate reads transponders from above, then the induction loop after the gate actually records if there is any vehicle passing. If at this time the system can't identify the passing car by its transponder it takes a picture of your rear license plate. All you need to do (allegedly, as I never do that of course) is ride the dotted divider line cars are not supposed to cross. You need to ride it at least 5 yards AFTER the gate, then you can move left or right. There is a two feet gap between the induction loops: more than enough. When you're supposed to pay entering/exiting the freeway, you ride on a very narrow shoulder. Just spot the induction loop and avoid it.

How would you mount the transponder on a bike? Is it illegal to carry it in the jacket...making it harder to read...

I went to court recently and witnessed a lawyer beat a toll road ticket. It was issued by a cop, that's why it was such a big deal: considered a moving violation as I remember. All it boils down to you should have a proof of your TollRoads membership with you like your last monthly statement. I carry one in my "cargo" compartment.

If you don't carry a transponder you'll be photographed and issued a "toll by plate". Exactly the same amount. Provided you're a member and registered your plate with them. If you don't have the membership, you'll be asked to join upon receiving a ticket. The real problem begins only when the ticket is issued by a cop, but then it's a different ticket altogether meaning the money go to the local/state government, not TollRoads.

My transponder is in my backpack side pocket.. Or if I know I won't have the backpack I'll put it in my jacket pocket..

The 241 out here even splitting the gates I've still been dinged.. Though the Fastrack 3+ lane has yet to hit me on the time it's not free for motorcycles. :)

You mean entrance or exit gates? Or multi-lane passing gates? I any case the "gates" only read your transponder, but the actual vehicle sensor is appr. 10 yards further. On one-lane entrances/exits you can [accidently] drive on the shoulder which is appr. 2ft wide; theoretically speaking, of course no one here committed or even though of such crime. When passing under the multi-lane gate, the sensors are also 2ft apart. It doesn't mean however there's any play for you. You should practice precise riding of the dotted line as it requires concentration on a light flickable bike like R1 or R6, though my old porky 600RR was piece of cake. That's the only advantage of its "stability" I can think of.

If you're doing it while carrying your transponder, then I believe it is read anyway even if you're "splitting". Which in turn means you may be paying for the next car that triggers the sensor (which you managed to avoid).

Recently "someone I personally know" did all of that in the CHP presence. What a rush (he told me). They turned their attention to toll roads for about a month. Must be part of that alleged $9M state-wide "fundraiser" someone mentioned here a couple weeks back. Just make sure you have a huge SUV as a cover. No shortage of those in OC.

Another posibility (I'm too lazy to explore) is disabling a specially dedicated transponder: frying it in microvawe, drilling tiny holes and dropping in water. :dunno This way you'd be 100% protected if CHP stops you as you show them your transponder.

EDIT: automatic CHP link is a nice touch :roflmao

The transponder readers aren't constantly reading and only read your transponder when you go over the part of the road that has the sensors in them to activate them... (like traffic lights)

No matter what logic you use or how you try and spin your words, you've lost this battle.. I have my monthly statements to back up my facts.. The 91 express lanes have a flaw in the 3+ lane.. Because even if I go through the 3+ lane when it's free and hit the sensors it shows on my bill but of course a 0.00 charge.. but if I go around the sensors between 4-6 it'll never get me..

the 241 is different.. I haven't been "dinged" on the transponder because I've missed the sensor but have been hit by the camera.. Since I have a transponder it's no fine, just charges my account for the toll.. Which reminds me I need to move my license plate farther down.
