View Full Version : Husky no front brake??

Hey all
I was practicing at the track yesterday and all of a sudden i had NO FRONT BRAKE. Unfortunately I ended up crashing. (Not hurt, just spitting out gravel and weeds http://www.supermotojunkie.com/images/smilies/bigrin.gif ) This robbed my confidence all day.
So I brought the bike to the pits and noticed the following:
1. The caliper was not releasing very well at all. The front wheel did not spin freely at all. The front brake was dragging really bad, so my guess it overheated.
2. I took the caliper off to see if the was something wrong with the wheel bearings. The wheel spun freely. So it wasn't the wheel bearings.
3. Drained some of the fluid out of the bleed screw and pushed the pads back in. The wheel spun freely. Took it back out to the track for 4 laps. Same results: The brakes were dragging again.
Has anyone else experienced this? This is a fairly new bike and I prefer that my front brakes work all the time dammit! http://www.supermotojunkie.com/images/smilies/Hammer.gif
Does anyone have any ideas??
Thanks in advance....

Did you check the caliper itself? Does it need to be cleaned out?

Yeah...you might have some debris in the caliper that isnt letting it re-open completely.

two culprits are usually the cause of this and you've crashed enough to possibly have both.
1. dirty pistons on the caliper
2. warped rotor
Pull your pads out of your caliper do not push back the pistons give them a good cleaning with brake cleaner, or simple green and a toothbrush. look for any visible signs of leaking from the seals etc.
Get a measuring caliper set up fixed some how (a straight piece of metal will work also) put it a uniform distance away from the rotor with the front wheel in the air and check to see if your rotor is bent.
Front brake lock up on a track at speed is scarrrrrrry. I unfortunately know from first hand. With supermoto's you will probably want to clean your calipers every time you change your oil specially because you've been racing in dirt. You can call me if you have any questions or what not Wilchon and Rudy have my number. :D

Check your reservoir cap too...make sure your system is not being pressurized.

The thing that is confusing me is that he goes from pads dragging (completely normal) to no front brake at all.

I lost the front brake from overheating.
I know the brakes will drag a little bit, but they were dragging really bad..
If you're loosing your front brake, you have either air entering your system, or the fluid is boiling due to overheating. When the fluid boils, any moisture within the system turns to steam and causes air bubbles, which will cause a loss of brake fluid pressure. Sometimes a complete failure may happen.
1) Look for any leaks in the master cylinder, line and bleed screw.
2) Your brake fluid has absorbed moisture, or is the wrong type fluid.
3) Your fluid is boiling from being overheated, so completely bleed the system, and replace with a higher grade fluid. DO NOT use silicone based fluid if your manual specifies non silicone based fluids!

Avoid overfilling the master cylinder reservoir. Too much fluid will result in brake drag or even brake lock.
Used brake fluid (even clean, fresh fluid pumped through a new system to bring it up) should NEVER be reused.
MAKE SURE the master cylinder lever has at least 0.1mm freeplay between the lever cam or pushrod and the piston, i.e. - be positive that the piston is FULLY returned when the lever is released. EVEN SLIGHT ENGAGEMENT OF THE PISTON CAN RESULT IN BRAKE DRAG AND/OR LOCKUP!!! Thats what BREMBO says!

OK.
Rjohn and I flushed my fluid and re-bled the brakes. Worked fine once I pushed the pads back in.
Went out to the track for race practice (fookin hot out there) and my brakes started dragging really bad again. I can smell the pads when I pitted. So I would push the pads in every 4 or 5 laps or so just so they wouldnt overheat. (I can start to feel them fade after about 4 laps).
Interesting enough, there was another guy there that had the same bike with the same problem (he didn't even know), major brake drag.
So, I am tossing between rebuilding the caliper (which is buellshit cause the bike is still new) or buying a new caliper and rotor setup.
I also find it interesting that Husky completely replaced the brake system on the 06 models. So i am going to call them and have a chat about this!
Dude upgrade
and put better rotor , caliper and master
wish i could have made it out there but being mothers day the wifey wouldnt let me

Yeah. I think im going to buy a different brake system. Going to shop around for it.
Might call Terra, Motostrano, or someone to see what's available. Apparently other Husky peeps are starting to post up about this problem.
Gosh this is going to be $$$.

Wait a sec, this is a different problem.
The first problem was NO BRAKES, now you have dragging brakes?????
Or was the first problem dragging brakes as well?????
TWO very different problems.
Upgrading brakes is expensive, my KTM came with a 6 pot Beringer up front, that brake is just friggin' AMAZING!!!!!

No. Same problem.
The brakes were always dragging causing the overheating then failure.
I was looking at Beringer but they are pricey.

Probably cheaper to buy a Honda!
BTW...I just bought the Berringer system with Master cylinder, rotor, caliper, and steel braided line used for 470 bucks. :)

The guy on supermotojunkie is telling you to just buy a new master. I would take his advice and try that before dropping big bucks on a complete new system. Buy that master he mentioned and if it still doesnt fix the problem, you can use that new master with a different caliper. No harm no foul. Since your rotor on the Husky isnt 320mm, you will have to replace everything if you decide to go with a different caliper.

Gotcha, I read the original post as no brakes (loss of pressure), not as draggin' brakes.
What brand/make are the front brake calipers????? Also how many pots???? And what kinda pads are you running????? What is the rotor size?????

Just saw this, and read that thread on SMJ.
You can also rebuild the master cylinder, but I would be concerned about what the cause of the problem is before I did anything.
I'd be all over Husky's case and make them fix that.

Its a full Brembo 4 piston system.... I called Brembo and they are going to see what they can do... Perhaps they might help me out. (wont hold my breath).

I just realized that the Magura I have is a 16mm. Since I just got the Beringer setup, I could sell you my Magura...basically new. Itll cost you more than the Brembo, but Ill cut you a deal on it. You can see which one it is at Motostrano...Magura 190. http://www.motostrano-store.com/marapu.html
Let me know. You can try it out this weekend if you like.
